Clean Hydration vs. Popular Sports Drinks: Why Choosing Natural Ingredients Matters

Clean Hydration vs. Popular Sports Drinks: Why Choosing Natural Ingredients Matters

Introduction: What Is Clean Hydration & Why It Matters

Not all hydration drinks are created equal! Here’s what you need to know:

Hydration is the essential for optimal health; supporting energy, digestion, and overall wellness.

When we sweat (or when losing fluid from illness) we lose water and electrolytes. When not adequately replaced it impacts our ability to focus, our mood and short-term memory and in severe dehydrated states can lead to symptoms such as headaches and migraines, fatigue, listlessness, confusion, dizziness, delirium and in extreme cases unconsciousness.

No doubt you can relate to feeling dehydrated and the pick-me-up a hydration drink can provide post a sports event or high intensity training or even after a bout of illness.

But not all hydration is created equal. Whilst there are many options of sports drinks, flavoured waters, and electrolyte powders that claim to replenish electrolytes, a lot of mainstream options including well known brands are loaded with artificial colours, flavours, and sweeteners that can do more harm than good. This includes the ‘Brilliant Blue’ or vibrant ‘Red’ popular sports drinks we’ve seen dominate the market for years.

Whilst a food first approach is always ideal, it is a likely scenario that there are times that call for a need to replenish lost electrolytes in a more dedicated approach.

‘Clean hydration’ is about choosing hydration options free from artificials ensuring you’re nourishing your body with ingredients that support your health, not work against it. Whether you’re an active mum, a busy professional, training with high energy output or looking to support your family’s well-being, making the switch to natural hydration can be a game-changer.

The Potential Hazards of Artificial Colours, Flavours and Sweeteners

Many commercial hydration, electrolyte or sports drinks contain synthetic ingredients including artificial colours and dyes, artificial flavours and sweeteners that can have negative health effects over time.

We are also seeing many countries now banning the use of artificial food dyes due to health risks.*

With these artificial colours providing no nutritional benefit, and with access to more natural alternatives, it’s an easy switch you can make for your health.

Let’s break down some of the most common artificial ingredients you’ll find in some of the most popular and common hydration drinks and brands (and ones to avoid):

  • Artificial Colours: Red Dye 40, Red Ponceau, Yellow 5 (Tartrazine), Yellow 6 (Sunset Yellow) and Blue 1 are widely used but these synthetic food dyes raise concern for health risks.  They have been linked to hyperactivity in children, digestive disturbances, and potential long-term health risks. Whilst some  countries have even banned the use of these in food products, they remain in Australian products. A review published in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology found that nine currently approved synthetic dyes raise health concerns, including potential carcinogenicity, hypersensitivity reactions, and behavioural issues.
  • Artificial Flavours: These chemically derived compounds mimic real flavours but can disrupt gut health and may contribute to inflammation.
  • Artificial Sweeteners (Aspartame, Sucralose, Acesulfame K): While marketed as ‘low-calorie’ and ‘sugar free’ alternatives, these sweeteners can negatively impact metabolism, gut microbiome, and even hormone balance. They are chemically-derived and have been linked to health risks.

*Recent research, including a comprehensive 2023 evaluation by the Center for Science in the Public Interest , has highlighted significant data gaps regarding the safety of dyes, calling for further investigation to improve public safety policies. The review underscores concerns over potential carcinogenicity, neurological disorders, and allergies linked to synthetic dyes. Furthermore, a major study commissioned by the UK Food Standards Agency in 2007, published in The Lancet, confirmed that artificial colours adversely affect children’s behaviour, leading to hyperactivity and inattention.

Choosing clean hydration means eliminating these unnecessary artificial ingredients and opting for natural, body-friendly alternatives.

What are the alternatives?

To make the switch to a hydration product that’s better for you here’s what you need to look out for a brand that is:

Free from artificial colours – look for a brand that usually natural colours.

Free from artificial flavours – look for a brand that uses natural flavours.

Free from artificial sweeteners. Avoid sweeteners such as sucrose, aspartame and other artificial sweeteners and instead look for a brand that uses natural sweeteners such as sea buckthorn or thuamatin (other common natural sweeteners include stevia or monk fruit).

‘Cleaner’ hydration brands such as Body Armour use naturally derived alternative colour compounds such as curcumin (turmeric), blue spirulina, beta-carotene, and carminic acid suitable for ingestion and a much safe alternative to artificial colours.

The Body Armour brand’s Hydrate Cordial and Hydration Icy Poles also uses natural  flavours and natural sweetener sea buckthorn or thaumatin. Sourced from the Katemfe fruit, its a protein-based natural sweetener and superior alternative to the commonly used synthetic sweeteners including sucralose.

Why Do Companies Still Use Artificials?

If these additives have questionable health effects, why are they still used?

  • Cost & Shelf Life: Synthetic ingredients are cheaper and help extend product longevity, making them more profitable for big brands.
  • The “Health Halo” Effect: Many electrolyte drinks claim to be healthy while secretly containing artificial colours, sweeteners, and preservatives.
  • Confusing Labels: Advertising health terms like “natural flavours” or “low sugar” on packaging can be misleading. Learning how to decode ingredient lists is key to making informed choices. Whilst you do want to look for brands that use natural ingredients and are low in sugar what you want to be aware of is that some of these terms are still used to mask processed ingredients. The way around this is to look at the ingredient panel on the product for transparency of ingredients used.
  • Clever marketing and aesthetic appeal: Naturally we are drawn to bright colours. We even see top performing athletes all drinking these in clever marketing collaborations, profits are clearly falling priority over health.

Clean Hydration Done Right: A Smarter Way to Replenish

Well balanced hydration includes replenishing key electrolytes naturally with the essential minerals your body needs including:

  • Sodium & Potassium tomaintain fluid balance and support nerve function. One of its most important roles is its ability to regulate water and fluid balance in cells, which is essential for the stimulation of muscle and nerve cells.
  • Magnesium which helps with muscle recovery, relaxation, and energy production. Magnesium is involved in hundreds of bodily functions including nerve impulse transmission, skeletal muscle contractility, blood pressure and cellular fluid balance making it essential for hydration support. I also plays a pivotal role in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, an essential mineral and electrolyte that supports muscle function, neurological health, energy metabolism and neurotransmitter synthesis.
  • Calcium & Chloride is crucial for hydration at a cellular level. Calcium plays a significant physiological role in assisting in the mineralisation of strong bones, contraction of muscles, transmission of nerve impulses, and secretion of hormones. Chloride is essential in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance. Without chloride, many of the other electrolytes would be unable to move through the cells.
